Despite Mixed Reaction to Budget, Québec Liberals see Budget Bounce

April 3, 2017 (Montréal, QC) – A new Mainstreet/Postmedia poll produced for the Montréal Gazette finds 1 in 3 Québec residents undecided about the provincial budget, with another 12% not having followed any budget news at all. Despite this, the Liberals have gained 5 percentage points from March to reach 39% support province-wide. The Mainstreet/Postmedia poll has a margin of error of +/- 1.95 percentage points, 19 times out of 20.

“It’s a story of contradictions” said David Valentin, Executive Vice-President of Mainstreet Research. “While more voters are willing to mark ballots for the Québec Liberals, support for the budget is soft with 30% approval and 29% disapproval – the remainder of Quebecers have not made up their minds yet.”

“The new numbers for the Québec Liberals come at the same time Quebecers tell us they believe new tax cuts are politically motivated and that there is not enough funding for healthcare and education.”

“Also seeing an increase over our March poll results is Québec Solidaire, up 4 percentage points to 12% support province-wide. The new numbers follow the arrival of Gabriel Nadeau-Dubois as Quebec Solidaire’s new candidate for the Gouin by election.”

“The real test, both for Québec Solidaire and the Québec Liberal Party, will be to see if they can hold onto their gains in the months to come. The next election is still quite some time away and there is one more budget between now and election day.”

“Both parties now have opportunities to shape the conversation in way favourable to them, the Québec Liberals can draw attention to tax cuts while Québec Solidaire can focus the conversation on an exciting new candidate,” he finished.
