Mainstreet Research finds most Canadians following Middle East conflict closely

Ottawa – November 7, 2023 – For Immediate Release

The most recent National survey of Canadians by Mainstreet Research shows a majority of Canadians are following the conflict in the middle east closely, almost two thirds said they are either somewhat or very closely following (65.8%) including 51% saying they follow very closely.

At the same time, the embattled Prime Minister Justin Trudeau trails the Conservative Party by more than 15 points (41% to 26%) and his personal popularity continues to test new depths. A majority of Canadians said they had either a somewhat or very unfavourable view of Trudeau (63%) versus just 35% who had a somewhat or very favourable view.  A net favourability of -28% is among the lowest Mainstreet has measured for a sitting Premier or Prime Minister.

Meanwhile, his main opponent, Conservative leader Pierre Poilievre enjoys a net favourability of just +1%. With a almost half of Canadians saying they have a somewhat or very favourable view (46%) and slightly less saying they have a somewhat or very unfavourable view (45%).

Key Findings

A month after the attacks on Israel by Hamas, Canadian opinions are complex.

  • Two thirds are following the conflict closely (66%)
  • A significant majority approve Canada’s position on supporting Israel (59%) versus 31% who disapprove (down 3% since October)
  • Three quarters of Canadians (75.4%) believe Hamas or Iran is responsible for the conflict
  • More than 7 in 10 (71%) support calling for a ceasefire to allow for Humanitarian Aid
  • A vast majority believe that a ceasefire must begin with the return of hostages (80.8%)
  • More than three quarters of Canadians identify Hamas as a terrorist organization (76%)
  • Almost 7 in 10 Canadians (68%) say the priority should be the protection of civilians in Gaza versus 32% who say the priority should be retaliation against Hamas
  • A combined majority (57%) believe Canada should use diplomatic efforts to support either humanitarian aid (22%) or a ceasefire (35%)

“Canadian opinions on the conflict in the middle east are complex, not surprising for such a complex situation.” said Mainstreet President & CEO Quito Maggi

“Support for Israel remains strong and there is a clear recognition that as an ally state, we should support efforts to defend Israelis and reclaim hostages. It’s clear that Canadians understand Hamas, Iran and it’s allies are responsible.” he added

“That said, the daily images and news of casualties and injuries does impact Canadian opinions. This demonstrates shared values of compassion and empathy to a scale we rarely see in public opinion.” He concluded.
