The latest snapshot of Alberta politics shows a divided landscape of political opinions. With just days left before Alberta voters head to the polls to vote on 10 questions presented before them, the United Conservative Party led by Danielle Smith finds itself tied with the Alberta NDP and the Mark Carney led Liberals are also tied with the Pierre Poilievre led Conservatives. Mainstreet tested 6 of the 10 questions being presented to Albertans and found mixed opinions.

On the question about increased control on immigration to Alberta, the yes side leads narrowly (52% to 48%). On the question of charging non permanent residents a fee for healthcare access, it is tied between the yes and no sides. On the question about providing identification to vote in Alberta elections, the yes side leads by a significant margin (58% to 42%). The no side leads on the question of abolishing the unelected Senate (51% to 49%) and on increasing the Alberta Government control over programs like healthcare, education and social services (54% to 46%).

On the question of beginning a separation process, a third of Albertans indicate they want to begin that process (34.4%) with two thirds choosing to remain as part of Canada and not proceeding with plans to hold a binding referendum (65.5%).

“The Alberta vote on Monday is not going to have meaningful impact on many aspects of Alberta legislation” said Quito Maggi, President & CEO of Mainstreet Research. “While the yes side leads on a number of measures being presented to Albertans, most significantly on the question of requiring identification to vote in Alberta, identification is already required to vote by Elections Alberta rules” he added. “The yes side also leads very narrowly on Alberta increasing control on immigration in Alberta, though this is indirectly tied to the question about healthcare premiums for non permanent residents where the vote is tied” he continued. “No referendum ballot as torqued to produce a desired outcome will fail as miserably as the one presented to Albertans on Monday, thankfully those who designed the ballot have severely underestimated the intelligence of Alberta voters.” He concluded.
